Bernz is set to release his first solo album, See You On The Other Side, July 8.
“It’s just a cool, quirky album,” the Mayday rapper says during Unique Access. “I finally got a chance to do my own stuff.”
The Miami artist says that the project will be lighthearted and, even though it is just his name on the album cover, he still got lots of help from his fellow Mayday rapper Wrekonize.
“He was there all the time,” Bernz says. “Every time I work on music, he listens to it and critiques it and helps.”
Wrek says that in the same way, Bernz helped him with his own solo LP, The War Within. The two Strange Music artists had been building together since before they signed with the house that Tech N9ne built and say that touring helped them grow as artists.
Berns says that the biggest growing pain that he had to experience working on a project on his own was literally doing songs by himself.
“Basically being on a song by myself was kinda like a big push for me,” he says. “I like being in a group. I like that dynamic. So that was the biggest thing for me was kinda like not putting anybody on a song was my biggest thing to overcome.”
Wrekonize says that Bernz is the last one to take credit for his work in the group setting, so he was excited to see his friend’s talents on full display.
“He’s always been the guy to be a part of everything, but then when it comes to slice up the credit, other than him just being a vocal on the song, he’s cool to just be like like, ‘Naw, it’s cool,'” he says. “Where, I’m like the opposite. I’m like, ‘Naw, man I played the drums, I did scratches or whatever.’ He’s always been so cool, so it’s dope to watch him do an album where there’s nothing, you can’t see anything but what he’s doing. It’s like, I enjoy watching that. It’s been a really fun process to watch and the album came out amazingly.”
