Slink Johnson & Soren Baker Discuss The Best Rap & Hip Hop Films

On the latest episode of The Grey Area with Slink Johnson & Soren Bakerthe duo exchange opinions about the best Hip-Hop and Rap films ever made and their impact.

There have been so many Rap and Hip-Hop related films to come out over the years that have been dubbed as hood classics, such as Juice, Boyz N the Hood and New Jack City.

As many movies are discussed, there’s one film that Soren and Slink feel like not only changed the music industry, but the movie industry as well.

“This is a credit to Master P,” Soren says. “The direct-t0-DVD rap movie that he revolutionized. People always say, ‘Oh I changed the game,’ or this or that, Master P did it with I’m Bout It.”

Master P’s 1997 film I’m Bout It was written, directed and filmed by the No Limit boss himself using a reported $1 million of his own money. It was independently released on videocassette and sold more than 200,000 copies, earning over $9 million, according to the New York Times.

“It was a straight-to-you type of situation,” Slink chimes in. “He didn’t wait for no distributors, no major studios to pick it up. P had his enough bread to film it himself and sell it unit-to-unit. He got all his bread his damn self.”

  1. They bring up a lot of great movies. What do you think of “8 Mile,” though? Should that be in the discussion?
