Weed culture has become synonymous with hip-hop in many ways, from Dr. Dre’s The Chronic album to Wiz Khalifa’s stoner anthems. Rappers are investing in the marijuana industry as cannabis becomes more and more accepted.
However, Skeme and G Perico are two rappers who don’t share in the culture’s affinity for weed. In an episode of Myths Exposed, the two Los Angeles area artists explain why they don’t smoke.
“It’s not cool,” Skeme says, claiming he can name at least 10 other rappers that don’t smoke weed. “It’s like weed makes me feel stupid. Who wants to feel stupid all the time, you know? It’s like I can’t even have a conversation. We could have so much to talk about.”
G Perico chimes in with his own explanation for staying away from Mary Jane.
“I don’t fuck with weed ’cause of paranoia,” he shares. “I’m already a naturally paranoid motherfucker. And that shit’ll just have me geekin, twitchin and itchin and shit, paranoid for no reason. I’m cool. I can’t handle the weed. I don’t know how niggas do it.”
Both rappers admit to smoking weed when they were younger and G Perico shares the moment when he decided to stop.
“I used to smoke a shitload of weed,” he says, “but I went to camp and when I got outta camp, I smoked a fuckin blunt and I was so fuckin paranoid and tweaking, I just laid down on the spot and my weed days was over.”
He claims after being shot recently, he finds himself “indulging in pain pills” but not percocet, a drug that’s being popularized by several in hip-hop, especially with Future’s viral “Mask Off.”
Skeme says that one drug all rappers can agree on is lean. He shares it helps his ADD so he “can sit down and focus.” It also allows space for him to create melodies that he wouldn’t have tried otherwise.
G Perico doesn’t agree so much on the universal appeal of drank.
“I fall asleep on that shit, and I hate going to sleep,” he says.
The two scheme (no pun intended) on ways to make some money off the continuously growing industry of enhancing products, including alcohol.
“You know what I was thinking about doing, though?” G ponders. “Ima fuck around and open me a church. That’s all tax-free. So Way Out religion. And guess what? It’s not gonna be Sunday morning. It’s going to be Saturday night.”
