Derek Minor ranks Compton (A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre) by Dr. Dre as one of the best albums. Detox never came out, but “he gave us Compton with an amazing movie,” Derek Minor says, referring to Straight Outta Compton. “I wanted to feel what I felt when I got The Chronic…He launched Eminem’s career, Snoop’s career.”
Both Derek Minor and host Soren Baker describe the excitement they felt when hearing Compton song “For The Love Of Money” for the first time.
Mentioning the features of the album, Soren Baker touches up on how Snoop Dogg “slaughtered” his verse on “One Shot One Kill.” “People forget how versatile Snoop is,” Baker says, “and they forget that he really cut his teeth as a gangster rapper.”
Soren Baker talks about the significance of “Loose Cannons” and how it is reminiscent of the early days of Ruthless Records with N.W.A, Eazy-E and Above The Law. “They really were the first ones that really brought in the skits, and had these storylines going on in the songs that stop the music,” Baker says. “And with ‘Loose Cannons,’ we get a view of that again.”
When asked about the legacy of Compton will leave behind, Derek Minor says that Dr. Dre is one of the most iconic producers. The Tennessee rapper adds that he felt inspired by the album and movie.
“As long as you stay engaged, and as long as you keep focusing on the music and making the main thing the main thing, I think that’s what I got out of Compton,” Derek Minor says.
Derek Minor also declares there “wasn’t any weak music on the album…These dudes are icons for a reason.”
“I think there’s no better way,” he adds, than “to be like, ‘Okay, I’m going to stamp my legacy musically, than Compton.”
